چکیده

We show that in an arbitrary o-minimal structure the following are equivalent: (i) conjugates of a definable subgroup of a definably connected, definably compact definable group cover the group if the o-minimal Euler characteristic of the quotient is non zero; (ii) every infinite, definably connected, definably compact definable group has a non trivial torsion point. ∗The author was supported by the FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia) program POCTI (Portugal/FEDER-EU) and FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia) project PTDC/MAT/101740/2008. A survey on groups definable in o-minimal structures

Groups definable in o-minimal structures have been studied for the last twenty years. The starting point of all the development is Pillay’s theorem that a definable group is a definable group manifold (see Section 2). This implies that when the group has the order type of the reals, we have a real Lie group. The main lines of research in the subject so far have been the following: (1) Interpret...

O-minimal cohomology and definably compact definable groups

LetN an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field. We develop the cohomology theory for the category ofN -definable manifolds with continuous N -definable maps and use this to solve the Peterzil-Steinhorn problem [ps] on the existence of torsion points onN -definably compact N -definable abelian groups. Namely we prove the following result: Let G be an N -definably compact N -definably connect...

The Euler characteristic of definable groups

We show that in an arbitrary o-minimal structure the following are equivalent: (i) every infinite, definably compact, definably connected definable group G has o-minimal Euler characteristic E(G) zero; (ii) if H is a definable subgroup of a definably compact, definably connected, definable group G such that E(G/H) 6= 0, then G = ∪{gHg−1 : g ∈ G}; (iii) every infinite, definably compact, definab...

Euler integration and Euler multiplication

By Euler integration we mean the integration of definable functions on R against the Euler characteristic. We investigate the structure of the ring of all definable functions (with compact support respectively), the multiplication being defined by the convolution with respect to the Euler integration.

On the Euler characteristic of the links of a set determined by smooth definable functions

Consider a polynomially bounded, o-minimal structure on the field R of reals. A smooth (i.e. of class C∞) definable function φ : U −→ R on an open set U in R determines two closed subsets W := {u ∈ U : φ(u) ≤ 0} and Z := {u ∈ U : φ(u) = 0}. We shall investigate the links of the sets W and Z at the points u ∈ U , which are well-defined up to a definable homeomorphism. It is proven that the Euler...
